When Dave left the band, he took that iconic singing voice with him, and Van Halen put Sammy Hagar in there and... ugg. 😖🤢🤮 The original line up was and will always be the best in my opinion. I like Eddie's guitar playing but with Sammy in the mix, it was like hearing Boy George singing for Def Leppard. It just wasn't right. Dave brought something to the table that was unique and defining and gave Van Halen as a band personality and style and originality... whereas Sammy, just brought his voice and guitar, and talent. I'm not taking anything away from Sammy but he will alway be remembered for "I Can't Drive 55" David Lee Roth is a living legend. I doubt any singer alive today could sing "You Really got Me" the way Dave could. Dave and Michael gave the Van Halen brothers exactly what they needed for success... the right combination. In my humble opinion of course.

Wow I forgot about this Dave is on fire. I think history will be cool and kind to this man. He kicked a lot of rock n roll ass, loved how he said what he wanted with flair, gusto and a poetic intelligence .. A great artist.

Today he has no Voice! And nobody was a bigger jerk than Dave. Sammy was better for that band and still has his voice.

David Lee Roth should've also thanked his producer Ted Templeman who decided to produce David's EAT EM AND SMILE instead of Van Halen's 5150 album. For SKYSCRAPER, how does Dave repay Ted? By firing him and producing the album himself. Dave's career was never as big again. If Diamond Dave had done the right thing and kept Ted permanently as his producer, not only would SKYSCRAPER have been a better album but all the albums that followed would've been better AND quite possibly Dave's original solo band would've stayed together past SKYSCRAPER.

Shortly after Van Halen broke up, I remember seeing Eddy and Alex on MTV doing an interview in which they claim Dave left the band and they didn't see it coming and were pissed off. Of course I can't find that interview anywhere on-line now. But I can find plenty if interviews in which they say they fired Dave because he was a pain to work with. And then would run his character or work ethic down. I believe Dave left because working together could be contentious at times and he hit it big with his California Girls video and felt he could do his own thing without the hassle of the brothers Van Halen

Not to discredit Sammy, but we all know that UNDISPUTED... DIAMOND DAVE did it best and was as key a member of Van Halen as the Van Halen Brothers were/are combined. The very definition of Rock and Roll personality, presentation, lyricist and singer.. David Lee Roth!! 😎👍❤

David Lee Roth was and always will be Van Halen for me and many others. No disrespect to Sammy Hagar. He is a great musician in his own right. He will always be the Red Rocker! But imagine, the Stones without Jagger, Zeppelin without Plant, Queen without Mercury, Rush without Lee - you get the picture! DLR just brought that IDENTITY to Van Halen! EVH was a great, ground breaking guitar god, but I imagine that without DLR he would have been akin to other guitar wizards known more for their virtuosity with the guitar ala Satriani, Eric Johnson, Petrucci, and others. EVH without DLR would have made his mark regardless as he was a guitar wizard. But remember, it was DLR, after all, who suggested they use the name VAN HALEN! He was that showman, that front man and the VOICE that epitomized Van Halen just as much as Plant, Jagger, Mercury were in their bands. At the end of the day, the sum is greater than its parts. And Van Halen with DLR was a generation defining culturally iconic MONSTER of a band in their prime.

I think part of the disagreement between VH and DLR was that VH wanted to use more keyboards in the music and DLR wanted to be more guitar driven musically.

What Dave did solo was pretty good. Of course it wasn't VH,but it was good for him solo without Eddie to depend on for writing the music.

No, that was David Bowie. Wrong Dave. This Dave, David Lee Roth, was the front man for the Monkees. He took over from Mickey Dolenz after the Van Torken brothers kicked him out for his lack of work ethic and his love of brown M&M's.

Lifelong Van Halen Fan here. That's Van Halen with DLR and Van Halen with Sammy. Nobody is going to make me choose anything. You either love Van Halen or you don't, simple as that. None of us had any say in how this went down. Apparently there was some bad blood forming during the bands most successful tours ever (1984). Eddie never told Dave how to sing, or not to do flying snap kicks from a ten foot riser, and therefore Dave shouldn't have tried to mess with Eddie's desire to bring in Keyboards. Christ, it's not like Ed was putting down the guitar forever, it was for a couple of songs on 1984, and those couple of songs propelled that album to the number two spot across the Nation, selling nearly 11 million copies in the U.S. alone. Dave left the band and wanted to pursue a career in Hollywood. I love DLR, and he was the lead singer of Van Halen until he dropped the news on Ed, Alex, and Mike that he was leaving. Ed wasn't going to let Dave control what the other three had planned, and so that was that. Folks shouldn't go on hating Dave, or Sammy, or Eddie / Alex. You can leave Mike out of all of the shit. I followed this stuff every chance I had. All we had was Guitar Player, Hit Parader, Rolling Stone, and other one off publications to go by, as well as the radio stations. Again, no fan of Van Halen wanted this to happen, but it happened. Funny how this stuff is being thrown around some 4 years after Eddie's passing. Eddie Van Halen is not here to defend himself, so folks should be careful what they post, as I and millions of EVH Fans will defend him in his absence. Eddie wrote all of that music from day #1. Nobody is perfect. That was a whole lot of unfortunate and unnecessary drama to be sure. Van Halen with Dave or Van Halen with Sammy is Van Halen. ❤
